Preparing children for Kindergarten and beyond! The Long Island School for the Gifted (LISG) Pre-Kindergarten Program was established to provide an appropriate challenging education for gifted pre-school children in a nurturing environment. They are both intellectually challenged, comfortable socially, and thereby build a solid foundation which enables them to grow and develop to their potential. Based on the LISG model, our Pre-K is open to gifted children who are 4 by December 31, who demonstrate high intellectual ability measured by an individually administered IQ test. Our Pre-K program includes a complex accelerated curriculum with instructional practices that foster a love of learning and nurture an inquisitive mind.
Activities incorporate fine and gross motor skills, music and movement, nature and science, art, dramatic play and the use of computers. A combination of direct and individual instruction, free play, group time and physical activity are utilized to meet the many needs of the whole gifted child. The Pre-K Program utilizes all of the LISG facilities and members of our faculty. In addition, the Pre-K children are able to participate in appropriate special programs and assemblies. The hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Snack time, lunch, rest and recess are included in the school day. We follow the LISG calendar. For information on testing and the application process, please call the admissions office at (631) 423-3557.
The LISG After School Program is a safe, nurturing, and educational program offered to children, grades K-8. The purpose of our program is to assist working parents by providing students with a well-supervised environment after the conclusion of the school day. Our program is supervised daily by two of our own certified teachers.
An administrator is in the building at all times.
At the end of our school day, the children remaining for after care are greeted by one of our teachers. During the first half hour, children unwind through physical activities, either outdoors (weather permitting) or indoors in our gymnasium. Afterwards, children have snack and homework time. We provide snacks and juice each day. Children begin their homework, having one hour of supervised homework time (or until homework is completed). One-on-one help is provided, if necessary. After homework has been completed, the children are free to play games, draw, do arts & crafts, work on puzzles, etc. For children staying beyond 5:00 p.m., as a group they can either continue to play games in the cafeteria or return to the gymnasium. Upon pick up, parents are informed about their child’s homework, any difficulties the child may be experiencing, and any work that was not completed. Available Hours / Days
